- The Logo Meaning Behind "ToL"
The Initial Story A new platform deserves a meaningful logo. Here’s the story behind the Taste of Life (ToL) logo. One day, while working and interacting with the people I serve as a licensed clinical social work (LCSW) practitioner, I considered how to design my new logo. As someone of Japanese-American heritage, I found the concept of incorporating origami art to be original, personal, and unique. Origami is a form of Japanese art in which paper is folded into intricate designs. That day after work, I immediately went to Daiso , a Japanese dollar store, to buy a pack of origami paper. I envisioned crafting a teacup and teapot, symbolizing my love for tea and Japanese culture. Tea fills my soul with warmth, serenity, and joy—one of my many “tastes of life.” The Easter Eggs of the ToL Logo I collaborated with a longtime friend to create the logo. Her outstanding talent helped create the design and digitize it beautifully. I’m so grateful for her time and brilliance. This logo holds hidden meanings, each representing one of ToL ’s seven pillars: Emotional Wellness. The hearts 💕 symbolize peace and balance. Physical Vitality. A symbol resembling the Korean finger heart 🫰🏻 sprouting from the origami teacup 🍵 on the left represents vitality. Holistic Remedies. The leaf 🍃 on the bottom right signifies natural healing. Altruism and Kindness. The three lines on the bottom to the right of the origami teacup 🍵 resemble a hand 🫴🏼 offering support. Self-Discovery and Aha Moments. The spirals 🌀 above and to the right of the vitality symbol depict life’s journey. Quick and Healthy Recipes. The origami teapot 🫖 and teacup 🍵 reflect my Japanese heritage and love for simple, nourishing food. Gratitude and Simplicity. The pink spiral 🌀 left to the vitality 🫰🏻symbol, the entire circle ⭕️ encapsulating artwork as the whole, the three dots 💬, and the hook🪝on the lower right represent gratitude. The colors match the website's theme, including my favorites, pink and orange. Each element of the ToL logo carries a piece of my journey and the values that shape Taste of Life . Cheers! - Mindful Cooking
Transforming Your Kitchen into a Sanctuary In a world that often feels rushed and chaotic, our kitchens can become more than just a space to prepare meals—they can be sanctuaries where we reconnect with our senses, creativity, and inner calm. Mindful cooking brings full attention to every step of the culinary process, turning cooking into self-care and meditation. What Is Mindful Cooking? Mindful cooking engages your senses and focuses on the present while preparing food. Instead of simply following a recipe or rushing through tasks, you slow down to notice the colors, aromas, textures and sounds around you. This intentional approach enriches the cooking experience and deepens your connection to the food you create. What's the Benefits? Focusing on the simple, repetitive motions of chopping, stirring, and simmering can be incredibly meditative. Mindful cooking transforms the kitchen into a space for relaxation, allowing you to let go of external stresses and be present in the moment. My senses are engaged. For instance, I love the sounds of the knife and food ingredients being chopped on my bamboo cutting board. I enjoy the sizzling of the vegetables and the aroma of garlic and onions being sweated. I am incredibly excited to taste the final product of the dish. By paying attention to the journey of your ingredients—from raw components to a finished dish—you cultivate a deeper appreciation for the nourishment you provide your body. This awareness can lead to healthier eating habits and a more respectful attitude toward food. Taking the time to prepare meals carefully can boost your self-esteem and provide a rewarding sense of achievement. Every meal becomes an opportunity to celebrate your skills and creativity. Embracing the Art Mindful cooking is more than just preparing meals—it’s a path to greater well-being and a deeper connection with yourself and the food you create. By infusing your cooking with intention and attention, you can transform a routine task into a joyful, meditative practice that nourishes the body, mind, and spirit. I encourage you to experience this practice the next time you're in the kitchen. Take a deep breath, slow down, be present, and let each movement of culinary art become a celebration of the present moment. Happy cooking! Cheers! Gini x 13 April 2025
- Kindness Matters
Kindness Is Cool In a world that often feels rushed, competitive, and divided, one of the most profound and impactful things we can do is choose kindness. Kindness is more than just being nice; it is an intentional act of compassion, understanding, and generosity that can transform both the giver and the receiver. True & Authentic Kindness Genuine kindness starts within. It isn't only about grand gestures; it’s found in simple, everyday moments, such as offering a smile to a stranger, holding the door open, checking in on a friend, or choosing understanding over judgment. Kindness is not just about what we do but how we carry ourselves daily. The Multiplication of Kindness Kindness has a beautiful way of expanding. Extending a kind gesture doesn’t just stop with the recipient—it spans outward. A simple, kind word can brighten someone's day, making them more likely to pass that positivity to others. It would make a significant difference if everyone took a moment to uplift those around them. The Science Behind Kindness Studies have shown that acts of kindness release oxytocin, often called the "love hormone." This feel-good chemical enhances mood, reduces stress, and fosters a sense of connection. Additionally, kindness has been linked to lower blood pressure, increased lifespan, and overall well-being (Cedars-Sinai, 2019). But beyond science, kindness shifts our perspective—it softens our hearts, makes us more present, and reminds us of our shared humanity. Being kind is not just good for the soul—it’s good for our health, too! Small Ways to Live with More Kindness Rather than thinking of kindness as something to "give," try embracing it as something to "be." Here are a few ways to cultivate a kinder mindset in your everyday life: Start with Yourself. Be mindful of your self-talk and practice self-compassion. Treat yourself as you would a friend. Patience. Instead of letting irritation take over, take a breath and choose a calm response. Sometimes, the kindest thing we can do is offer patience. Notice the Good. Kindness isn’t just about actions—it’s about seeing and appreciating the goodness around you, even in the smallest moments. Be Present. Giving someone your full attention—whether a friend, coworker, or stranger—is powerful and respectful. Show Curiosity. Instead of assuming or judging, approach people and situations with curiosity and an open heart. This also offers fluid communication. Offer Grace. We all have bad days, make mistakes, and fall short. Choosing to extend grace instead of frustration encourages heartfelt understanding and connection. Express Appreciation. A sincere “thank you” or a kind word can brighten someone’s day. Acknowledging others, even for small things, strengthens relationships and spreads positivity. The Takeaway Kindness doesn’t require extra time or effort—it’s a choice to show up with warmth, understanding, and intention. The more we integrate kindness into our daily mindset, the more it shapes our world and ourselves. In a world where you can be anything, be kind—not just in action but in presence, thought, and heart. Cheers, Gini x 6 April 2025 References Cedars-Sinai (2019). - Spring: A Season of Renewal & New Beginnings
Welcome, Spring! Spring is a season of transformation. When the world awakens, everything feels alive with hope and possibility. For me, spring represents renewal and new beginnings. It's nature's way of reminding us that no matter how heavy life may feel, we can start fresh and look forward to what is ahead. Spring wasn't always a season I appreciated. Growing up in Hawai'i, where the climate is warm and consistent year-round, we didn't experience spring like other parts of the world. For much of my life, spring felt like any other time of year, and I didn't see its significance. In the last several years, though, I have begun to see the season differently and notice its deeper meaning. Easter, which falls during spring, holds a special significance for me. It symbolizes hope, growth, love, forgiveness, and the chance to start anew. Spring's Deeper Meaning Spring offers a chance to pause, reflect, and rejuvenate. Whether you're releasing old habits or cultivating a healthier mindset, the message is clear this season: it's time to grow. Spring invites us to dream again. Further, we can set intentions and nurture them into something beautiful. Whether embarking on a new project, deepening relationships, or rediscovering passions, spring reminds us that growth is always possible. No matter our age or where we are, we’re never too old to grow. Lessons from the Season Growth doesn’t happen overnight, but we can thrive in our own time with patience and care. This reminder encourages us to embrace our journeys and trust that our efforts will bloom when the time is right. A Call to Embrace the Season As we step into spring, let us take a moment to embrace its energy of renewal. Reflect on what you want to release, what you want to grow, and what new beginnings you are ready to welcome. What does spring mean, and how can you embrace its energy this year? Share your thoughts below. I’d love to hear about your journey. Cheers! Gini x 23 March 2025
- Never Stop Bettering Yourself
A Curious Mind & a Lifelong Pursuit The longevity of learning has always been essential to my life. My curious mind constantly wants to explore new things and understand the world around me. But it hasn’t always been a smooth, straight path—I’ve gone through trial and error to figure out what sparked my passion. And I'm still experiencing this. Starting with Social Work Since early adulthood, I’ve been drawn to learning new skills, hobbies, and knowledge. It all started after I completed the social work program. The field is vast, and when I first entered it, I had big ideas about how I wanted to establish myself as a practitioner. The more I learned, the more my ideas expanded. It felt like the more I knew, the more there was to discover. A Change in Course After earning my clinical social work license, I considered pursuing a doctorate in clinical psychology. However, about a year and a half into the program, I realized it wasn’t the right fit. I accepted that changing course is ok. I still dream of earning a doctorate in a different field, and that journey is still unfolding. Discovering Holistic Wellness During the lockdown in 2020, I leaped and became a certified dōTERRA essential oil (EO) specialist. This wasn’t just about products—it was a deeper dive into holistic wellness, learning about where EOs come from and how they’re made. This certification came when I needed something to focus on, and it helped me reconnect with my sense of purpose. It reminded me that the most unexpected paths can lead to beautiful discoveries. The Culinary Journey In 2021, I followed another unexpected passion and enrolled in culinary school . Cooking had always been a joy of mine, but I wanted to take it further. It was challenging at times, but that challenge was exactly what I needed. In late 2022, I earned my Diploma in Culinary Arts and Operations. While it was a huge accomplishment, I’m considering another degree in holistic wellness from the same school. My path is never linear, but it’s always moving forward. And that's what I love about this journey of learning and growth. It's neverending for me. Mindfulness & Meditation In 2024, I added another layer to my journey by earning my mindfulness and meditation facilitation certification . This was a natural progression because of my work and personal interest in mental wellness. It’s been rewarding to guide others in mindfulness, but it hasn’t been without its learning curves. In early 2025, I also completed a certification in mindful self-compassion , which has deepened my ability to help others—and myself—practice kindness in the most challenging moments. In my ongoing growth journey, I still have many aspirations to achieve. I’ve learned to prioritize them because I understand I can’t do everything simultaneously. Even if I didn’t work full-time, I couldn’t reach all my goals simultaneously. And that’s okay. It’s not about doing everything perfectly or all at once—it’s about keeping that hunger for learning alive and continuing to grow, bit by bit. Never Stop Learning The most crucial lesson I’ve learned is never to stop learning. It’s a beautiful gift to continue evolving, even when the path gets messy. Every step, every setback, every success—it’s all part of the journey. Cheers! Gini x 30 March 2025
- Celebrating Social Work Practitioners
Social Work: The Heart of Service & Advocacy Social work is one of the most versatile and impactful professions, offering opportunities to create change at every level—micro, mezzo, and macro. Whether providing one-on-one support, empowering groups, or advocating for systemic change, social workers are at the forefront of building a more compassionate and equitable world. Throughout my career, I’ve worked with children and older adults, two populations at opposite ends of the life spectrum. Each has taught me unique lessons about resilience, vulnerability, and the profound strength of the human spirit. The Many Faces of Social Work Social work is about getting out of your comfort zone, listening without judgment, and championing those who feel unheard. These are the three groups we work with: Micro: Supporting individuals and families through life’s most difficult challenges. Mezzo: Strengthening communities through programs and education. Macro: Transforming society through policy advocacy, reform, and social justice efforts. It’s this versatility that makes social work so rewarding. Every day presents an opportunity to connect, advocate, and empower. Reflections on My Journey Working with children has reminded me of the importance of instilling hope and modeling positive behavior. On the other hand, working with older adults has taught me the beauty of perspective and the value of honoring life’s journey. Working with both populations has shown me that resilience begins with being seen and heard. Celebrating Social Work Month & World Social Work Day (18 March) March is a time to celebrate the profession and acknowledge the incredible contributions of social workers worldwide. This year, I reflect on the challenges we face and the hope we bring to others. Social workers are advocates, educators, and change-makers. We don’t just work in systems; we aim to transform them. A Tribute to Social Workers Everywhere To my fellow social workers: thank you for your dedication, compassion, and tireless efforts. You are the unsung heroes of our communities, shining a light in places that need it most. "It is not your job to save everyone. Some people are not even ready to be helped. Focus on serving those who are, and be wise and humble enough to know when the best service you can offer is to guide them toward help in another direction." ~ Anna Taylor, award-winning New Zealand fiction author Cheers! - Taking Care of Yourself During Election Season
The Election & All the Feels I'm not one to discuss my political views, but this election season has tremendously affected many people I know, including myself. Election outcomes stir various emotions, from excitement and hope to anger and frustration. With everything going on, it’s essential to care for our emotional and mental health and maintain balance as we process our reactions and those of others. Helpful Tactics Here are seven strategies that have helped me stay grounded and resilient during this befuddling period: Acknowledge your feelings. Whatever you feel—relief, disappointment, or something in between—is valid. Allow space for yourself to feel them without judgment. Recognizing these emotions can reduce their intensity and help you feel more at ease. It's ok not to be ok. Feel your feelings. Limit media exposure. Constant updates and discussions from the news can be overwhelming and disturbing, especially in the fast-paced world we live in today. Consider limiting your media consumption from once a day to once every few days. Maybe even up to once a week. This can help you stay informed without feeling overloaded with [negative] information. Engage in calming activities. Meditation, deep breathing exercises, listening to soothing music, going on a nature walk, and yoga are excellent tools for grounding myself during emotional and anxiety-provoking moments. Find activities that bring calmness to your life. Take social media breaks. Social media can intensify our emotional and mental health, especially during election season, when many opinions and debates are heated. Consider limiting time spent scrolling or taking a break altogether. These reductions and breaks from social media help me regain control over my sanity. Periodically, I just log in to post for ToL and then quickly log off. Focus on self-care. Make self-care a priority. Small acts of self-care, such as cooking a favorite meal, reading a good book, journaling, or getting some fresh air outdoors, can help recharge your well-being. I practice self-care ALL THE TIME! Connect with supportive people Talking with like-minded people who understand what you’re going through can be incredibly beneficial. Lean on those who offer support without judgment. I'm grateful for my inner circle, whom I can lean on when I need someone to vent to or discuss sensitive topics. I am forever appreciative that they honor, respect, and love me for who I am. Practice mindfulness and gratitude. Mindfulness techniques can help you stay anchored in the present moment when stress levels rise. Practicing gratitude, such as writing down three things you’re thankful for daily, will help you shift your focus to the positives in your life. My annual Thankful Challenge has been a cornerstone during this tumultuous month. Gratitude changes everything! Take Care of YOU! Maintaining emotional and mental wellness is an ongoing journey. Be kind to yourself, be patient, stay grounded, and connect with what brings you strength and peace. Navigating this time together with compassion and self-care can make all the difference. You are NOT alone. Cheers! Gini x 17 November 2024
- Bringing People Together through Food
The Unity of Food Food unites people across cultures and backgrounds, cultivating connections and understanding through shared meals and culinary experiences. Whether it’s a family dinner, a potluck with friends, or trying new cuisines in the community, food is a universal language that transcends boundaries and promotes unity. How Food Brings Us Together Food brings people together for several reasons: Cultural Expression. Food is a powerful way to express cultural heritage. I love sharing dishes from Hawai‘i and Japan with people from all over the world and from different descents. Sharing traditional recipes connects me to my roots and allows me to share my culture with others. Social Bonding. Gathering around a meal encourages conversation and interaction. It’s a beautiful way for family and friends to reconnect, share stories, and bond. And honestly, what’s a better way to connect with loved ones than through delicious food? It's the perfect pair! Celebration. Food is at the heart of so many celebrations and special occasions. Let’s be honest: when there’s food, the joy of those moments feels so much more significant. Exploration and Adventure. Trying new foods and flavors is always an adventure. In the summer of 2023, I went on a food tour in France, which was incredible. I discovered so many amazing dishes and shared that experience with people worldwide. Comfort and Nourishment. Food has an incredible way of comforting us physically and emotionally. Preparing and sharing a meal with loved ones has always been my go-to during tough times. There’s nothing like a good meal with great company to lift your spirits. Community Building. Food brings communities together. Whether it’s a potluck, a festival, or a communal meal, these gatherings create a sense of belonging and togetherness. Let’s be real: food is almost always the star of any community event! Crossing Language Barriers. Food speaks a universal language. Even when we don’t share the exact words, sharing a meal shows warmth, hospitality, and friendship. If we can connect over a hearty meal, that says more than words ever could. Seven Tips to Harness Relationship Bonding Over Food Host a cultural potluck. Everyone brings a dish from their background. Provide recipe cards to share the stories behind the dishes. Make a weekly tradition of cooking or dining together with loved ones. Even simple meals can create lasting memories. Create a signature dish or dessert that becomes a staple at every celebration, giving guests something to look forward to each year. Organize a “global night” at home or with friends where you cook a dish from a different country each week. Rotate who chooses the cuisine! Keep a few go-to comfort food recipes to prepare when someone needs cheering up or support. Volunteer at or attend local food festivals or soup kitchens. It’s an excellent way to meet people and give back. If you host someone from a different culture, ask them to help you prepare one of their favorite dishes. It’s a meaningful way to bond and learn. Cheers! Gini x 2 March 2025
- The Power of Giving Back
The Ripple Effects of Generosity & Kindness Giving back isn’t just about helping others—it’s about building connections, cultivating gratitude, and creating a chain reaction of positivity. Whether lending a hand to a neighbor or supporting a local cause, every act of kindness transforms our communities and enriches our lives. Generosity has filled me with enormous joy and purpose. Helping others often leads to unexpected blessings in our own lives, reminding us that kindness is a full-circle experience. Seven Simple Ways to Give Back Minor acts of kindness can make a meaningful difference. Here are seven easy ways to give back, no matter your time or resources: 1. Lend a Helping Hand. Offer to assist a family member, friend, colleague, or neighbor with groceries or lend a listening ear. These gestures strengthen bonds and build trust. I enjoy offering support, empathy, and encouragement whenever possible. 2. Support Local and Small Businesses. Supporting small shops is essential and close to my heart. When shopping for gifts, I always seek out unique, local finds. It makes gift-giving extra special while boosting local economies. 3. Donate. Clothing, food, supplies, or monetary donations go a long way in supporting organizations that serve those in need. I frequently donate clothes and food items to local nonprofits and support causes that align with my values. Knowing I can provide my belongings to a new home makes my heart smile. 4. Share Your Skills Hosting cooking or wellness workshops can be a powerful way to give back. Last year, I held free multiple cooking classes to promote healthy eating. It was a joy to cook, share my dishes with attendees, and provide educational insights on healthy food ingredients. 5. Mentor Youth. Becoming a mentor can meaningfully shape young lives. As a young adult, I mentored an adolescent, spending time with her monthly at parks or malls. It was fulfilling to guide, inspire, and witness her growth. Exhibiting kindness and showcasing positive role modeling go a long way. 6. Volunteer at Shelters. Homeless shelters often need compassionate volunteers. I’ve spent several years serving meals at a shelter. Hearing them say, "Thank you for serving and for the food," warmed my heart, even though we didn't make it. 7. Spend Time with Seniors. Most of my career has been dedicated to working with older adults. Beyond work, I’ve volunteered at senior centers, sharing stories, laughter, and life lessons. Their wisdom has enriched my life in countless ways. The Benefits of Giving Back Giving back is a personal journey of gratitude and fulfillment. It helps us step outside our routines, develop empathy, and feel more connected to the world. Uplifting others cultivate kindness, joy, and a sense of shared purpose. Bringing It All Together Giving back doesn’t require grand gestures—every small act counts. Whether volunteering, donating, or spreading kindness, you contribute to a stronger, more compassionate community. Let’s make giving back a daily practice that uplifts others and ourselves. Cheers! - Seven Winter Wellness Tips to Last the Entire Season
Managing the Challenges of the Winter Season Winter offers crisp mornings, relaxing afternoons, and cozy nights but also challenges our skin, hair, and overall comfort. In the colder months, humidity decreases, and indoor heating reduces moisture. The chilly outdoor air and heated indoor environments left me with dry, itchy skin and occasional static shocks—ouch! Seven Winter Recommendations You're not alone if you’ve struggled to feel comfortable and hydrated this season. Here’s a comprehensive guide to managing dry skin, combating dry indoor air, and reducing static electricity during winter. 1. Hydrate from the Inside Out. Staying hydrated is crucial. Although it’s easy to forget to drink enough water in the winter, your body and skin need it regardless of season. I enjoy hot herbal teas and warm water with lemon. I love soups and can eat them daily. They're particularly fitting for the winter season. 2. Establish a skincare routine. Winter is the time to give your skin some extra TLC. Look for creams with hyaluronic acid, glycerin, and ceramides that lock in moisture. I use CeraVe Moisturizing Cream . Remember to use sunscreen. UV rays can still damage your skin during winter, especially snowy and overcast days. I like dōTERRA's Sun Body and Mineral Spray . Use a gentle exfoliant once weekly to remove dead skin cells and allow moisturizers to penetrate better. I love Aveno's Tone+Texture Renewing Scrub . Apply throughout the day and before bed. Wear cotton gloves at bedtime to lock in the moisture. I treasure Burt's Bee's lavender and honey hand cream . Look for hydrating lip balms containing shea butter or beeswax. I enjoy a multitude of naturally-made lip balms. One of them includes Sun Bum's sunscreen banana lip balm . 3. Managing Winter Allergies. My allergies seemed to worsen during the fall and winter seasons. Here’s how to minimize symptoms: Vacuum carpets, wash bedding in hot water, and dust surfaces often to reduce allergens. Use an Air Purifier. High-efficiency particulate air (HEPA) filters trap allergens and improve indoor air quality. In 2024, I invested in UVilizer , a UV sanitizer I use weekly at home. Hypoallergenic bedding materials resist dust mites and allergens, creating a healthier sleep environment. 4. Relieving Congestion. Cold air and indoor heating can irritate nasal passages, leading to congestion. Combat this discomfort with these strategies: Drinking plenty of water helps thin mucus and moisten your nasal passages. Herbal teas and warm broths are comforting options. Saline nasal sprays or rinses clear out allergens and relieve dryness in your nose. To ease congestion, inhale steam from a bowl of hot water and cover your head with a towel, or take a steamy shower. Use a drop of peppermint or spearmint essential oil to intensify the experience of easing congestion. Diffusing essential oils, such as peppermint, spearmint, and eucalyptus, can help clear nasal passages and promote relaxation. 4. Opt for Lukewarm Showers. While a hot shower feels fantastic on a cold day, it can worsen the dryness of your skin. Stick to 5–10 minutes in lukewarm water. Apply body cream or oil to lock in moisture while damping your skin. 5. Prevent Static in Hair and Clothes. Static electricity can be a frustrating side effect of winter. Here’s how to tame it: Use anti-static sprays on the soles of clothing and footwear, as well as on the seats and floors of your vehicle. An anti-static keychain safely discharges static electricity, preventing shocks from metal objects Wool and synthetic fabrics can generate static. I only wear 100% cotton or other 100% natural materials to minimize shock. I'm sure I would get shocked more frequently if I wore synthetic fabrics. Rubbing a dryer sheet over your hairbrush or clothing can quickly neutralize static electricity. 6. Protect Your Skin from the Harsh Winter Wind. The cold winter air can be brutal, especially on our skin. Here are some tips to protect our delegate skin: Wear gloves, scarves, and hats. Apply a protective balm and creams to areas prone to dryness, such as your hands and lips. Wearing face masks has helped protect my face from the cold winter air. 7. Avoid Overheating Indoors. While cranking up the heat is tempting, excessively warm indoor environments can dry out the air. Wear cozy layers to lower the thermostat slightly. Open windows briefly to circulate fresh air and prevent stagnant, dry air. Finding Comfort in Winter Winter may bring challenges, but you can make it a more comfortable and enjoyable season with a few mindful adjustments. By nourishing your skin, managing your environment, and taking proactive steps to alleviate discomfort, you’ll be ready to face the season like a boss! What’s your favorite winter wellness tip? Share your go-to remedies in the comments or on social media. Let’s embrace the beauty of winter with ease and distress. Cheers! Gini x 9 February 2025
- Finding Light in the Darkness
Seasons Change, & So Does Our Mood As we enter the heart of winter, many notice changes in mood and energy levels. While some embrace the season's coziness, others may struggle with sadness, fatigue, and disconnection. For those affected by Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD), winter can feel heavy. What is Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD)? SAD is a type of depression linked to seasonal changes, often caused by reduced sunlight in the fall and winter. It disrupts the body’s internal clock and affects the production of serotonin and melatonin, which regulate mood and sleep (Mayo Clinic, 2024). Symptoms of SAD: Low energy and persistent fatigue. Difficulty concentrati ng. Changes in appetite, often craving carbs. Oversleeping or insomnia. Feelings of sadness, hopelessness, or irritability. Seven Tips to Cope While I’m embracing winter as best I can, I admit there have been moments where I’ve experienced some symptoms of SAD. But through optimism and resilience, I’ve found tools that helped me feel more grounded and uplifted. If you’re navigating similar feelings, you’re not alone. Here are seven ways that have helped me cope with SAD—and that might help you, too: Set Realistic Expectations. I am reminded to continuously be kind to myself and adjust my workload if necessary. Setting realistic expectations is vital to keep a well-balanced life. Get Outdoors. Fresh air, natural light, and being in nature improve my mood and focus. A quick walk during daylight hours has made all the difference. It brings a smile to my face. Stay Active. When my energy is low, moving my body seems like the last thing I want to do, but it ultimately helps. Whether it’s yoga, stretching, or a brisk walk, physical activity naturally lifts my spirits. Stay Hydrated. Consuming enough water throughout the day can be challenging. It's a work in progress. However, hydration plays a key role in maintaining energy and mental clarity. Connect with Others. Connection is crucial and a significant part of my life. I treasure socializing with loved ones, especially through the many technology-based methods available. Practice Mindful Self-Care. I’ve learned to honor my need for rest and reflection during winter. Meditating, listening to calm instrumental music, and relishing in a quiet moment bring me peace. Practice Gratitude. Starting and ending each day by listing three things I'm grateful for, big or small, shift my mindset and improve my emotional resilience. Further, it's made things easier to embrace the present moment. When to Seek Help If SAD symptoms persist or significantly interfere with your life, reaching out for professional support is a sign of strength. Therapy, medication, or a combination of treatments can provide relief and help you feel like yourself again. There is no shame in that. Finding Joy in Winter While winter brings challenges, it offers rest, self-care, and growth opportunities. By leaning into these strategies, I’ve found ways to navigate the darker days and rediscover moments of light and joy. What helps you cope during winter? I’d love to hear your experiences in the comments or connect with you on social media. We can embrace this season and support one another in finding the light. Cheers!
